For my final university project we were given an open brief with the only restraint being that the project must be completed within 8 weeks. I decided to build an interactive coffee table, titled Table Service, that uses RFID readers underneath the table to read RFID tags placed on the bottom of the cups and glasses to determine the type of drink (and location) placed on the surface. By the submission of the project, the system was essentially a ‘bookcase’ ready for ‘books’ (read: events) to be put into it; such as games, infographics, videos and other information.

Installation test demonstration.

The BBC asked the university department to propose and develop an interactive installation for the BBC’s part of the Manchester International Festival in 2011. The class was given the brief to design an interactive experience based on the ‘ZingZillas’ (a children’s musical television programme) targeted at an audience of children. The tutors would then assess each project and submit a single recommendation to the BBC.

My project titled ‘Harmoni’ uses a projector to project four symbols onto the ground: Drums, guitar, bass and vocals. When a person stands on one of these symbols (detected by a webcam), the musical track of the respective instrument plays through the speakers. If four people are stood on all four symbols, the complete ensemble for the track plays.

The installation was displayed at the UX&D Showcase at the BBC North Developing Talent Conference 2011 and later commissioned by the BBC for the Manchester International Festival 2011.

In March 2010, as part of a team of four, we launched an Augmented Reality Game named The Truth Of It. The project consisted of a group of websites, motion graphics as advertisements distributed around online social networks, posters and a live broadcast over the internet using Livestream.

My contribution to the project was the development of the storyline, background story, creating the collection of websites utilising a guided user experience. The websites were styled as though digitally distorted and broken, to fit in with the ‘underground’ and virtual bombarded environment; many hidden links, clues and breadcrumbs guiding the audience through the experience.

The brief for the project was to design and propose a concept for a calendar application for the iPhone and iDevices, targeted towards a student audience.

During the second year, I was given the task to design and propose a DSi (The most recent version of the Nintendo DS at the time) game or application to promote the interaction between members of a certain demographic.

My proposed application was a DSi satellite navigation system targeted towards and audience of taxi drivers, built on a backbone of social participation to report traffic problems and other location specific events. Inspiration for the project came from discussing problems with the navigation system they were currently using, with a taxi driver. He explained various issues including the lack of a feature to report a traffic problem or report that a blockage has been alleviated.
